All aboard for an adventure back in time about 100 years – 1914 to be exact! Every Canada Day, Doon Heritage Village (in Kitchener, Ontario) opens its doors for guests to visit and experience life in the early 2oth century (FREE!).
Whether you start your journey through the fascinating Waterloo Region Museum or stroll through the little village, there’s a feeling of a simpler life, perhaps not an easier life, but a life quite different from our busy modern times.
Gone are the days of yore with wooden sidewalks and children playing with hoops and stilts. The old-fashioned clothes and nostalgic shops in this picturesque setting, re-create history to show what life was like in the Waterloo Region when Kitchener was called Berlin.

I would consider myself somewhat of an expert on stilts (perhaps my dancing helps me balance 🙂 ) as long as I’m only a foot off the ground!! 😉

I always enjoyed visiting Pioneer Village in Toronto when I was a kid. Here in Washington there’s a town called Winthrop that has wooden sidewalks and old west building facades. It’s a fun place to visit. The horse tie-ups are unused though, since people park their cars in those spaces now 🙂

I guess there’s a little nostalgia in most people! We love to romanticize the olden days, even though most of us were not alive in the pioneer days! Little House on the Prairie had a significant influence on us in the 70s. 🙂

I’m glad you like it, Josep-Maria! Thanks for taking the time to watch! I did very well walking on stilts, my brother made me a pair when I was young, it’s so fun! There were just as many adults trying to walk with them yesterday and children had to wait their turn! 😉
