Red and Black Buffalo Checks

Or as we call this pattern in Canada–Lumberjack squares or Lumberjack plaid.

I love these big bold checks and they get their name from the Canadian lumberjacks who wear jackets and shirts with this red and black plaid.

While shopping on Black Friday, I bought two plaid tops at Eclipse. This one is dolman style and is made in Canada, a sporty look and I paired it with black velvet leggings.

Red accessories: beret (thrifted), vegan purse (bought on Whidbey Island) and new red booties from Walking on a Cloud.

Saw these cute black and red hens that match my outfit.

What’s your favourite plaid?

Thank you so much for directing me to this post, Carmen! I adore your buffalo plaid outfit. I actually have a long buffalo plaid cardigan at our mountain home (which was total lumberjack territory before the national park went in!), and since we haven’t wanted to travel during the pandemic it has been languishing there in my closet lonely and forgotten. I’ve never styled mine nearly as well as you have your sweater! You can probably guess this, but I pair it with black leggings, black tunic, black boots, and black handbag, and even black spinel earrings—ugghhhh. May I ask what a vegan handbag is? I’m not vegan but follow a pescatarian diet with most emphasis on plant based/gluten free. I feel terrible saying my most of handbags are made of leather, which I never gave thought to and am only just learning about eco friendly fashion (with much thanks to you). Thank you again for all of your style advice!

Glad you asked, Nancy! A vegan handbag (or vegan shoes) are not made with animal skin, such as leather, suede and fur). Good quality ones (such as this red over-the-shoulder bag) last for years and do not flake, crack or fall apart as some cheap vinyl ones do. You get what you pay for.

While I do not wear animal fur because of my love for animals and not wanting them to suffer and die for fashion, I always bought leather (never connecting that it is still animal skin without the fur) until I learned more about the harm it does (to our environment and workers, as well as misery for animals) from my daughter.

An excerpt from her blog …

      “It’s not green.

The reason leather shoes don’t rot away like roadkill is because of chemicals. Leather is tanned with an acidic chemical compound that preserves it. Leather is soaked in biocides and fungicides to prevent mold, and it’s treated with nasty concoctions like sodium sulfide to remove the hair. Even chemicals like arsenic and formaldehyde are used.

In places where leather production is prevalent (such as India and China), water and air pollution is high. Workers (and nearby residents) also face high instances of cancer from all the chemicals.”

      What’s wrong with leather?

There are wonderful, eco-friendly alternatives. This is an amazing video on a wonderful product.

Red and black do go perfectly well together. I love how you matched hat, bag and boots also. I love red, but I don’t have any squared stuff. Nice of the right coloured hens to join. 🙂

Thanks so much Maggie, accessories add pazazz to an outfit. Red and black are a great pair and so is black and white which is your trademark! 🙂 The other top I bought at Eclipse is black and white plaid.

It’s very popular, isn’t it? More than other years and I even got buffalo plaid PJs in flannel. Yes, flannel, baby, it’s cold up here in Canada! 🙂
