Leather is not Fabric

I have heard people use the term “fabric” for leather. Leather is animal skin, but I guess people prefer the euphemism—fabric.

The little bunny on my sidebar lets readers know that my blog is fur-free. I wear faux fur to promote the look without cruelty. I have a hard time now to wear leather. Once upon a time, I thought it was a byproduct and it would be thrown in the garbage because the animals (mostly cows and pigs) were killed for meat.

I found out from my daughter, Jean, it is actually a co-product with much money to be made, all at the expense and abuse of these poor animals.

Leather is now like fur to me: the skin of dead animals and it is making me very sad to wear it. I am finding faux leather and canvas shoes that are comfortable, stylish and cruelty-free. I have not given away my leather shoes yet, but I still feel sad when I wear them.

Fur and leather production uses so many chemicals and pollutes the environment. It is not eco-friendly as they would like to pretend.

Thank you Jean! I hope people will take the time to check out the links that will inform them of the needless suffering of countless sentient beings and how we can all help animals simply by not buying animal products.

Thanks for the wealth of information I have read on your blog.

I love how you call it Sunshine and Slaughter, explaining that someday you hope the “S” will be dropped and it will be a world of sunshine and laughter!!

Thank you for caring and sharing!!
For the love of animals ❤️

This outfit has lots of textures: my hat is corduroy, the jacket is a shiny leather-look with sparkly buttons and a floral design on the hem with tiny studs.

I’ve added a gray lace scarf for a feminine touch.

Vegan cross-body bag with fun fringes is from Drizzle and Shine.

These are my favourite black faux leather and faux suede pants. Booties look like suede but are velvet and the floral print keeps my outfit looking lady-like and soft.

Dear Carmen, I have always been moved by your defense of the rights of animals and that you be consistent in all your daily activities. Today’s look is very original and beautiful, the hat looks great, fun and attractive. I love the fake leather jacket, it has a lovely print and the booties too. I love your scarf, it is very delicate. A beautiful boho outfit that adapts to your delicate and subtle style thanks to the accessories. You have a beautiful figure and this look highlights it.

Thank you very much dear Josep-Maria! Your comment means so much to me! It shows you are also a compassionate man who cares about people, animals and the earth. These things are important to both of us and we share a love for fashion but not at the expense of people and animals. What I have seen in leather production documentaries and THE TRUE COST is the deplorable working conditions for the workers and the unbelievable pollution it causes. In addition we know that this is extreme cruelty to beautiful animals. It is simply not necessary to do this.

I appreciate your fashion opinions and kind compliments! 🙂

Thank you Nancy! It may not be the popular opinion, but I know that more and more people will choose compassion, once we know THE TRUE COST (for people, animals and our precious planet!).

I am not a leather fan and have never owned a leather jacket or any leather garment. I find leather is not so cosy and comfortable. I might have the odd leather shoe. I don’t go out buying socially leather stuff. The faux leather look fine too, although again not for me really. I would need to check my handbags though, but as they are never expensive I doubt it that they are leather. ( I am not a handbag person either, rather a rucksack for me.♥

You’re so right Ute, leather is not cozy. The jacket I am wearing is a glazed fabric: a shiny, leather-like appearance, but is soft and comfortable. I’ve had it for about 15 years. Pants were a gift from a dear friend, also soft and comfy. I need a stylish rucksack too! 🙂

  7. So true. Leather is not fabric. And animals suffer for it. Not worth it to me. There are so many eco-friendly, cruelty-free options that make my heart sing when I wear them. Oh, I have that same purse and use it almost daily.

Thank you for making me aware of this barbaric industry which we don’t need, we have wonderful alternatives (I couldn’t agree more) that make our hearts sing! 🙂 It’s strange how I would never wear fur but didn’t make the connection that leather was the animal’s skin without the fur. THE TRUE COST shows the environmental damage and human suffering–for what?–to satisfy vanity and whimsical so-called fashion.

      With compassion❤️
