Weekend Getaway: Beach Style

Sauble Beach

The west coast of Southern Ontario is dotted with beach towns all along Lake Huron. Summer is the best time for taking a road trip to Sauble Beach. It’s not only one of the most popular beaches in Canada, but also one of the longest fresh water beaches in the world–7 miles long (11 km).

You can’t miss the giant welcome sign which looks like a huge gateway to a panoramic view of this spectacular lake.

For a nautical look I wore skinny sailor stripes with bell sleeves and red deck shoes which I’ve had since the ’80s (they belonged to my daughter when she was a teenager, I’ve inherited a few of her clothes/shoes/accessories). This silver starfish pendant and white deck pants complete my beach look.

Lake Huron is one of the Great Lakes, I’m sure most of you reading this would recognize the Great Lakes on a map, but have you ever been to any of them? These lakes look like an ocean. everyone is amazed at the size whenever we take visitors from Europe to one of our Great Lakes.

I bought cool cat-eye sunglasses in several colours (yes, there are shops!).

A random photoshoot on the way to Sauble Beach, looks like an abandoned restaurant and it felt like we were in a ghost town in the south west Arizona. Well, this is south west Ontario.

Southampton

After enjoying a beautiful sunset at Sauble Beach, we drove to Southampton and stayed there overnight. The next day we had breakfast in a quaint little bistro and went for a morning stroll along the beach. It was very peaceful and relaxing: blue skies and sun shining, literally a breath of fresh air! I love the sound of seagulls and waves crashing gently on the shore. The view of Lake Huron was magnificent as always.

Blue and white are my favourite colours to wear by the sea. I’m loving bell sleeves and this top is a soft shade of blue and matches the big blue sky. When I like a style, I tend to get several. I have 5 tops and a dress with bell sleeves.

Like all tourist towns, there are unique shops. I noticed a cute little boutique Bliss. The owner Jackie is retiring and had a fantastic sale, but that’s another story.

We continued our road trip along the coastal highway to Bayfield.

Bayfield

This rural small-town reminds me of Mayberry, the ficticious TV town from the 1960s.  We’ve enjoyed many day trips to this charming place over the years where time seems to stand still, everything’s the same, a curious feeling of déjà vu. And did I mention there are shops in every beach town? Some of the shops have changed, but the same nostalgic feeling remains.

There are many places to eat and we chose a vegan lunch on an outdoor back patio on a county-style picnic table, the setting was winsome and the falafels were delicious!

Then it was off to the beach to wade in the cool water of Lake Huron. This white cotton dress goes from shopping to the beach: a pretty summer dress, cool, comfortable and what I love about it is that I can wear it for any occasion.

I cherish these memories of warm summer days by the sea!

Have you been to a lake or ocean this summer?

❤ carmen

  6. Blue and white is such a classic. You know what I like-your Breton knit shirt with that little update of the flounce sleeves- such a fun twist.
Embarrassing, I’ve never been to Canada so I certainly enjoyed the photos.

Thanks so much! Glad you like it. I took three outfits for the trip, only blue and white. Talk about embarrassed, as a Canadian, I’ve only been to two provinces: Ontario (where I live) and Quebec (for one day) and I’ve never been to our capitol city Ottawa. Yet I have been to over 25 States and I have been to your capitol Washington D.C. I would love to be an American and live in the States. My daughter moved to Seattle in 2000 and is an American citizen.

I didn’t realize you are such a traveller… over 25 States…..we have been to only a few States….I don’t count the ones we simply drive through…..we have now been to all Provinces…and, as you know, to several countries. (Please, remain Canadian!!!)

Not to worry Bob, we tried immigrating to the States twice many years ago and were turned down. When my parents immigrated to Canada, my cousin and her family immigrated to California. My first time in California was when I was 16 and I’ve been California dreaming ever since.

I am counting the States we’ve driven through because we still saw the sights. 🙂 Try counting the ones you’ve driven through and see what you come up with. 😉

What a beautiful and interesting place, and how beautiful and delicate your look! I love your jersey, it’s pure elegance and delicacy. And how beautiful to see you with your white pants, so yours, and the delicate combination with blue! And always beautiful to see you with your glasses tojas, although they are of cat, your hat, your sandals … But much more exciting is to see you with your wonderful white dress, that is your most beautiful look. The beautiful white dress, your somber, your smile, your beautiful hair, your delicate skin … all that is the most beautiful aesthetic set that can be seen on Earth! And walking barefoot on the beach, with your hair in the wind … that already exceeds any definition!

You’re always generous with your kind words and I appreciate so much your encouragement! My hair was very windblown and I had no chance to comb it before the last photos. Also I had been wearing the sun bonnet most of the day and by the time the last photos were taken, I see now in the photos that it looks a bit messy, however, it is real life. 🙂 The white dress is my favourite summer dress!

And you wore the perfect outfits! Blue and white are my favorite colors to wear by water, too. I love the top – blue and white stripes and bell sleeves! All my favorite elements in one piece!

How beautiful along this lake. Real holidays, an immensely big lake like an ocean. Nice it is not salt water. You look so fabulous in everything you are wearing , perfect for such a trip. Love it! You live so close to all 3 lakes. I looked it up where you went. It does not seem very crowded though.

Thank you so much Ute! There are 5 Great Lakes, this is only one of them. Lake Huron is the second largest – about 60,000 square km (almost the size of Bavaria). Just imagine how long a drive! There are many beaches along the coast of Lake Huron, I have shown 3 in this post, the longest is Sauble Beach (the first one I showed). From Tobermory at the north part to Sarnia at the south, it is 325 km. The length of Lake Huron is 332 km. The size is hard to fathom.

Don’t forget your swimsuit, but if you do, there’s lots of shops! 🙂

Wow we could sink Bavaria in it 🙂 …. that is incredible. No wonder it looks like an ocean when you go to the beach as you cannot see the other end. all the lakes we have are ponds compared to that. I will certainly bring my swimsuit when I visit. That will be a trip on my itinerary too! thank you Carmen!

What a wonderful blog. My, you covered a lot of km. for being away only one night. I know Janet will visit BLISS next week. On the same street is a shop “Sisters on Huron”. Aunt Geri, with her limited eye vision, read the sign as “Sisters on Heroin.
The Great Lakes are marvelous…. we have had visitors who simply must taste the water….. can not believe that it isn’t salty!
I recognize the settings of many of your photos.
Please let me know where you found vegan food.

Thanks so much Bob! Indeed, the Great Lakes are a marvel! The world is an amazing place and I would call the Great Lakes a Natural Wonder, including Niagara Falls!

That’s so funny about your Aunt Geri!! 😀

Most restaurants are accommodating vegetarians and vegans, this was just a little place in Bayfield, I don’t know the name of it but they had falafels on the menu which are vegan.
