Four Generations of Fashionistas

When I count my blessings, one of my first is my dear mom! It seems like such a long time ago since I felt her loving embrace on Mother’s Day! I treasure the memories, but how I wish I could hear her voice and see her face to face. One of my fondest childhood memories is going to the dressmakers together, just the two of us, where she had the seamstress make us matching outfits.

My mom had a very fashionable wardrobe and this DVF wrap dress (from the ’70s) was one of her favourites. Jean inherited this timeless dress and wore it to meet Diane Von Furstenberg. Jean let me borrow it and I wore it for a dinner date on the top of the Space Needle in Seattle and on my 63rd birthday.

I have three wonderful children and love them all dearly, but only one daughter. She was the first one to call me mommy.

Jean means the world to me, yet we live a world apart because she moved to Seattle in 2000. We keep in touch with chat and phone calls but it’s always a treat when we get together, usually somewhere else in this big wide world: California, Florida, New York City, Stuttgart, Berlin. She’s only been “home” 3 times since she moved out west. We’ve also been to visit her in Seattle 4 times. Hopefully, Jean will be taking a short holiday to visit us in July.

We have some of the same clothes but never wear them at the same time. I’ve enjoyed our Style Challenges on our blogs, where we wear the same thing but style it differently.

These graphic tees were thrifted: Jean wore hers with green capris and I wore mine with white skinny jeans and a straw hat like the girl in the graphic.

We bought these houndstooth dresses on our holiday in New York City: Jean is wearing hers with little black shrug and blue shoes, I’m wearing mine with a black cardigan, black tights and red booties.

A few of our matching outfits …

I have two grandchildren (a boy and a girl, my oldest son’s children) who call me mimi. She’s very stylish with hair like Rapunzel (it has never been cut, only trimmed by her mother). She’s a dancer too and helps me with my children’s dance class.

This was a day we set up my Smurf collection and by chance we wore similar hoodies with jeans and heart socks. ❤

Table is set with my mom’s Shadow Rose Rosenthal china.

Remembering my dear mom, a lady of elegance and style.

Happy Mother’s Day to all moms.

Thanks a lot Nanette, it was lovely! The best part was having two of my children (my boys) come for dinner, but I sure missed my daughter because she lives in Seattle.

  5. Hi Carmen, happy mothers day to you!! I am sure it is hard to be without your Mom today, and having to rely on the great memories you shared. That dvf dress is just stunning, I like how Jean is styling it with tights , and you look fabulous in it. The houndstooth look is lovely on its own or accessorised the way you model it.I have to say it again, you two look like sisters!! How beautiful is your Mom’s china collection? And your Mom , what a beautiful and stylish Lady , i can see how she influenced her Daughter to be the woman she is!! Have a lovely day, hugs, Terri xo.

Thank you so much for reading my story Terri!. My mom was very loving and caring, she was so helpful with my three children, I never had to hire a babysitter. The more you love someone, the more you miss them.

Glad you like the china collection, it’s very unique, she brought it from Germany when my parents immigrated to Canada.

Hope you had a lovely Mother’s Day!

My dear Carmen, what a wonderful, tender and loving post! Memo to think that the influence of our mothers is something that also unites us. Our mothers were women who loved elegance and style, like us and as your daughter and granddaughter, a beautiful way to continue with the heritage of those women who forged our illusion for fashion.
