Dominion Day in Red and White Gingham

It’s been 150 years since Canada became a nation. July 1st used to be called Dominion Day when I was young.

I live in a humungous village with 35 million people! Canada means “village” in Huron-Iroquois, and today our VILLAGE is 150 years old.

I bought this red and white gingham summer dress with a vintage vibe especially for a ’50s birthday party I was invited to. Unfortunately, it didn’t arrive on time for the party, but I’m getting lots of wear out of it during these Canada Day festivities.

Version 2

It’s a full circle dress, perfect for twirling on the dance floor.

It was a lovely day for our annual visit to Doon Heritage Village.

Go through the bridge and walk into a quaint little village with authentic houses and shops built over a hundred years ago.

The villagers will greet you with smiles and wearing fashion from 1914.

Cherry jewellery, Canada sunglasses, red lipstick and a little Canadian flag on my cowgirl hat just for the fun of it.

Time to catch the train home at Petersburg Station after an enjoyable trip back in time to a more simple life. This train station was transported from the town of Petersburg. The locomotive is not actually in use, but it’s fun to imagine.

Carmen, I didn’t even notice your maple leaf tat, until I read Josep-Maria’s comment! Then I had to go back up and find it!
Your life is a bowl of cherries today!

I love your dress, my dear friend Carmen…and your shoes, and your hat, and those cute cherries:)
Some 20 years ago, my husband and I visited Doon Heritage Village together with our first Canadian friends we’ve met through ‘Host Program’ dedicated to newcomers to Canada as we were at that time. It was one of the most interesting lessons about the local history. Thank you for reminding me about that. What a great idea you had for Canada Day celebration!

Thank you very much my dear friend Ileana! It’s been a long time since you visited, you really must go again, so much has changed in 20 years. The new museum is interesting.

Hope you are enjoying the summer holiday. See you in August!

I have said many times that there is not a more beautiful symbol of Canada than you! All your looks for Canada Day are wonderful and I still have your image wrapped in the Canadian flag, an image for the souvenir. This dress is beautiful, a real treat. A vintage, romantic and country-style dress that falls in love with the viewer. The precious cherries in the dress and in your ears, the delicate vichy, the combination with the white (your color), the volume and movement of the area of the skirt, the delicate design of the neckline, the hats (both precious, although I prefer you with the pamela), the game of red in your glasses, your bracelet and your shoes … so many things that catch my attention. The decoration with the railway bridge, so Madison, so evocative … And that delicate tattoo on the arm with the leaf symbol of Canada, that to me reaches my heart! In short, a wonderful look, a beautiful outfit and a woman who embellishes everything, because beauty, Carmen, it’s you!

Thank you so kindly Josep-Maria! I appreciate your fashion expertise. As I have said before, you notice every detail because you are very observant. The tattoo washes off but it was fun for Canada Day! The dress makes me feel like a woman from the 1950s.This place is perfect for celebrating the Canada Day holiday. It makes me think about the different life that people had a hundred years ago with many hardships too.

What a pretty dress! Yes I remember when July 1 was called Dominion Day, I think that changed when we got the new flag. We had the biggest party here in Ottawa, unfortunately it has also been the rainiest weekend..but the celebrations went on! We are lucky to live here and even though I was born in Canada I love hearing new citizens talk about how proud they are to live here🇨🇦

Thanks so much Allison! We had a downpour, but there is a museum on the grounds so we were able to enjoy that until the rain stopped. I remember our flag from when I was young and I was disappointed when our flag changed from red, white and blue to only red and white. I miss the blue. I would prefer the red maple leaf in the middle on a white background with blue at each side. 🙂
