I’m in love …

I’ve always been in love with the sea and yet I don’t swim. The sight of water evokes romance in my mind; whether a babbling brook or the waves of the ocean, it makes my heart happy as a woman in love.

A dream come true: Jean and I stayed in Possenhofen for a few days with my cousin and her daughter to relax by Lake Starnberg (Starnberger See) near Munich in Bavaria.

SissiThis is the summer place where Princess Sisi (Elisabeth) once lived. Before my trip to Germany I watched the trilogy of her life the Sissi Collection (three 2 hour DVDs in German) and the movie Forever My Love which is a condensed version (two hours) in English. I highly recommend watching the 6 hours with English subtitles FIRST.

This castle was once her childhood home and favourite vacation retreat. Empress Elisabeth was an avid horsewoman, possibly the best female equestrian in her day.

Unfortunately, the museum was closed but Jean enjoyed a Bavarian pretzel …

And I had my picture taken with Sisi …

I love history and although Sisi’s sad life came to a tragic end, she lived being loved immensely and completely by her prince, the Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria. Perhaps the movie romanticized her life somewhat and felt more like a fairy-tale, her real life was miserable without a happily ever after.

Have you seen this classic movie from the 50s?    If not, be sure to put it on your list!

My suggestion: watch the movie first before you read the true story.

Thank you for joining me on my Germany travels and please come back as I take you to Munich next time!

carmen

Note: Sisi was her nickname originally spelled Sisi and later Sissi.

Hah, yes…water evokes romance…..romantic songs such as “I’d Love to Get You on a Slow Boat to China…..”

I sure do like your navy blue top with the starfish.

Four cousins… first and second generations… making such lasting memories.

So true Bob! No wonder people take cruises on the Love Boat! This is one of my favourite tops I bought in Germany, glad you like it! This was a trip to remember, as it was our first time the four of us have ever been together! 🙂

These pictures make me want to visit this area in Germany. It looks absolutely wonderful. I love 1950s films, but have never seen Sissi. I’m putting it on my “to watch” list.

My dear Carmen, I’m in love with the Sea too! My first encounter with the magnificent Black Sea brought overwhelming emotions in my heart and tears in my eyes! I was 9 years old then…and continued to go to my beloved Sea every year…for over 30 years!

I love the Starnberger See too. We went to the Rosen Insel last time we were there. This was hte lake where Koenig Ludwig walked in and committed suicide too… allegedly.
    Wonderful pictures!

Isn’t it beautiful? Germany’s 5th largest lake! We almost went to the Rosen Island but decided to go to Munich to see the BMW museum: a healthy dose of nature at the lake and then time for the state of the art museum and hi-tech cars. It was incredible!

The death of King Ludwig ll apparently remains a mystery as no water was found in his lungs, some believe he was murdered. Very sad in either case.

You are very welcome and thank you so much! Perhaps I’ll learn to swim some day, but I do have a fear of drowning, I hate having my head under water and I get cold so easily. I prefer to sit on the beach in the shade or under an umbrella, and walk along the shore at sunset.

I swam when I was younger…..unless I dove in, my head was always above water….terrible swimming form I am sure…now I get too cold too quickly…no more swimming. I, too, am a shade seeker and walk the shore early morning or sunset. 🙂
