Then and Now

Back in the 60s I had a cute little mini dress which I wore with black riding-style boots. My daughter Jean submitted this photo a couple of years ago to My Mom the Style Icon. It had two little pockets. I don’t know what happened to the dress, but the boots eventually wore out.

I was so happy to find a similar mini dress in a jumper style that I wear with similar vegan black boots. I wore it today to go to ballroom dance lessons with my friend Maggie.

I think mini skirts are not supposed to be worn by women over a certain age, but I don’t pay attention to that. If I like it–I wear it! Fashion is fun! Wear what makes you happy!

What about you? Do you wear minis?

You are just as beautiful as in the 60s, and so you can wear whathever you like!! Very cute your mini dress…I usually don’t wear mini ( but not even when I was young !)
    I think I wouldn’t feel too confident wearing…

  2. You keep on wearing those minis! How inspiring! I’ve always liked my legs best, so I still wear shorter skirts (and tights, as you do) and will be turning 50 within the year. I still consider myself pretty conservative. Where do you get your vegan boots and shoes?

Totally cute on you, Carmen, now as much as then. The rules about mini skirts don’t apply to women with legs like yours, and tights makes the mini almost conservative … so wear them happily. Interesting you should mention a favorite dress from the Way Back inspiring a new one. My grandmother made me a striped, polished cotton sundress in bright colors when I was a teen. I’ve seen similar lately, and am all wanting one!
I do wonder how the ballroom dancing went in moto-esqe boots, though!

Thank you so much for that lovely compliment Jan!! I agree, tights make it almost conservative and I feel more comfortable.

What a sweet grandmother you had, I’m sure she influenced your great style and love for fashion! Hope you buy a similar dress and live your memories in living colour!!

I changed into my ballroom dance shoes for the lesson – 😉

  7. I love your replacement dress. It took only 40 years to find it!

I’m not one for listening to what “a woman my age” *should* do. I’m also about what I like and what I feel comfortable in. There are so many rules in life that I’m going to ignore the fashion ones! I prefer minis with tights, but have been known to wear them with bare legs.

Thank you Jean! Guess we are both rebellious fashionistas which we learned from Oma. She broke all the rules and never dressed like frumpy or boring housewives. She made her own rules. You look great with or without tights in a mini. I feel a little naked in bare legs, so it’s whatever you feel comfortable in.

      Make your own rules! ♥

Wow! What a great photo of you. You haven’t changed a bit…except the addition of the tights : )

I’m like you…I wear minis with tights now. Sometimes in the summer if I’ve put on lots of tanning cream I will still wear them too. I have to be feeling confident about myself that day.

Thank you so much Suzanne! In this weather, I have to wear tights, but I do like the look of tights or leggings with a short skirt anyway. It’s important to feel confident and comfortable. I’ve seen you in minis and you look fabulous with your gorgeous legs!!

Thank you Patti! I really appreciate you taking the time to stop by and comment! You look great in minis too, nice to live in a day and age when we can change the length of our skirts from one day to the next.

You know I keep thinking the same, can over 50’s wear this sort of thing. I love your dress and I would wear it too. In fact I am wearing a knitted dress ( tiny bit longer than yours) today with leggings and will put my black boots with it too. I am the same if I like something I wear it as it makes me feel good! You look great in it!

Thank you Ute! Leggings, tights and boots really work well with shorter hemlines, it’s a matter of how you feel.

Fashion is a matter of feeling good in what we wear!

Oh I love your outfit. It looks great on you and I love your bracelet too! I think women or anyone really, should wear whatever makes them happy. Personally I am more comfortable in short skirts if I’m wearing tights than I am with bare legs, but I was uncomfortable when I was 20 too so it’s more about me than my age.

An endearing picture, it’s beautiful to see a young lady. You were almost as beautiful as now. The dress you wear is now wonderful, I love the shade of gray and I love the design with high waist and pretty haberdasher finish top. I do not know whether mature women can wear mini dresses, or not. But I’m sure you can wear anything. Your style and your figure, enabling. Any garment looks wonderful on you. By the way, I love your jewelry, they are beautiful. And of course, I love the view from your window, I’m sure, in the light of the moon, is also wonderful.
