Animal Rights Day

It’s been a busy week preparing for Animal Rights Day. I’m an animal advocate and I’m following my daughter’s footsteps. I love how she gets involved with doing something, rather than just talking.

Let me start by saying I love people. I work with people and love to promote a healthy lifestyle. That’s why I’m a certified fitness instructor and I teach dance.

I also love animals. It grieves my heart to see the cruelty inflicted on innocent, helpless animals who cannot speak for themselves.

I also love this world and believe we should be good stewards, to care for this planet that God made.

For these three reasons I eat and promote a plant-based lifestyle.

We handed out pamphlets at Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Waterloo on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Throughout the day there were four expert panel discussions, free delicious vegan food being served, lots of info available and we had shown three pertinent films on the preceding evenings at both campuses. Forks over Knives, Maximum Tolerated Dose and Blackfish.

The event ended with our keynote speaker, Jo-Anne McArthur, world renowned animal rights photographer, and producer of the highly acclaimed documentary Ghosts in our Machine. Her message was both heartwarming and heartbreaking. If you have a chance to see this excellent film, you will get a glimpse of what this remarkable woman does and the passion that drives her.

Jo-Anne McArthur and carmen coburnIt was a pleasure to work with this dedicated and compassionate team for a worthy and urgent cause. Bob, on my left, is the tenacious and warmhearted organizer.

I appreciate your comment, Suzanne! I’m hopeful that more and more people will learn the truth about the needless suffering we inflict on helpless animals. The world will be a happier, more peaceful place and no one need go hungry. So much is political, there really is an abundance for everyone if we grow food for people and stop factory farming.

I hope to see the day that the same laws that protects pets and endangered species will apply to all animals. Perhaps I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one!! 🙂

      With compassion,

      ❤ carmen

Carmen, my solidarity with your projects. It irritates me cruelty to animals and believe in a healthy lifestyle. Glad to know that your life is like that. I like your striped sweater.

Thank you Josep-Maria! This is a topic that is very dear to my heart. I appreciate your support!

The top is really cute with little bunnies that are hard to see in the photo but I will show this in another post about New York City. I bought the stripped sweater while I was there in August.

  9. Congrats on helping to organize such an important event! I’m so proud of you for following my footsteps and for living your life in line with your values. I wish I could have been there. Jo-Anne would be great to hear, and I’m waiting for Ghosts in Our Machine to come to Seattle.

After reading about animal rights, it might sound frivolous, but I love the outfit you wore to leaflet. I adore the black and white top too (and recognize it from NY). It’s good to be well-rounded and balanced. I’m glad we can talk about clothes and health and animals!

I have YOU to thank, it was you who got me started to go vegan and to get involved with something so dear to my heart, my love of animals!

I was going to preface this post with similar words, that fashion is my fun and frivolous hobby. Our real passion is compassion. As an ambassador for the animals, I want to look my best as I approach people with this important message.

I like what you’ve said, well-rounded and balanced. Jo-Anne mentioned that too in her talk, to paraphrase, we need to take time for fun things and everyday life. You’ve told me that too when you suggested that I should go to an animal sanctuary, since I’ve been going to the pig vigils and bearing witness of the horror of the slaughterhouse, which is totally depressing.

      There is hope!! ❤
